The Canadian Association for Prior Learning Assessment (CAPLA) is the national voice for prior learning assessment and recognition in Canada. Its membership is comprised of adult learners, PLA practitioners, unions, businesses, academic institutions, equity groups, occupational bodies, sectors and non-governmental organizations. The Canadian Technology and Human Resources Board (CTHRB) is the sector council representing technology stakeholders. The site contains Canadian Technology Standards (a paid subscription is required for access) and a demonstration of PROfile, a system that will offer a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition feature to assess competencies against industry standards and/or best practices. PROfile will also record the education, experience, training, certification(s) and experiential learning of a user upon completion of the assessment. The site also contains downloadable reports, news and events related to its mandate.

Our membership includes industry, workplace, education, government and community practitioners. Meetings & workshops are held 6-8 times a year to provide networking and professional development opportunites for members. Very low fees; the best value in the country! Most meetings take place in Winnipeg, but we are trying videostreaming and other ways to support rural members. Its site has separate sections for first time visitors, corporations and practitioners and features information about the Centre and its training events for learners and practitioners. The section for practitioners connects directly to a discussion board which is not accessible without authorization.

Prior Learning and Competency Evaluation and Documentation (PLACED)

PLACED is part of the Gateway for International Professionals in The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, Ryerson University. The Gateway provides services to internationally educated professionals seeking employment at appropriate levels. The objective of the University of Saskatchewan's PLAR pages is to "to facilitate the self-directed learning of... staff members" about PLAR. A lot of effort went into the development of these pages and there is a substantial amount of information, including definitions, a glossary, learner profiles, FAQs and links to articles. However, no information is given on the frequency of updates, citations are several years old and some content, such as professional development opportunities, is obviously outdated.
